Calculating Roof Pitch

Roof pitch is one of the most important aspects of roof design and construction. It determines how much water will run off the roof, and also affects the overall appearance of the building. Calculating the roof pitch is a critical step in the process of designing and constructing a roof. In this article, we will discuss what roof pitch is, why it is important, and how to calculate it.

What is Roof Pitch?

Roof pitch is the angle of the roof in relation to the horizontal plane. It is usually expressed as a ratio of the rise to the run. The rise is the vertical height of the roof, and the run is the horizontal distance from the edge of the roof to the center line of the ridge. How To Calculate Roof Pitch

There are several ways to calculate roof pitch. The most common method is to measure the rise and run of the roof and then use these measurements to calculate the pitch angle. Here are the steps to follow:

Step 1: Measure the run of the roof

The run is the horizontal distance from the edge of the roof to the center line of the ridge. To measure the run, use a tape measure to measure the distance from the outside edge of the roof to the center line of the ridge.

Step 2: Measure the rise of the roof

The rise is the vertical height of the roof. To measure the rise, use a tape measure to measure the distance from the top of the roof to the bottom of the roof at the point where the roof meets the wall.

Step 3: Calculate the roof pitch

Once you have measured the run and rise of the roof, you can use these measurements to calculate the roof pitch. The roof pitch is the ratio of the rise to the run. For example, if the rise of the roof is 8 feet and the run is 16 feet, the roof pitch would be 8/16, or 1/2. This can also be expressed as a fraction or as a degree measurement.

How Much Roofing Material is Required For Steeper Pitched Roof?

Let's use an example of a house or building measuring 30' x 40' with a roof pitch of 4/12, 6/12, and a 12/12 pitch. How many squares of material (1 square = 100 sq. ft or 10' x 10' area) would each roof require depending on the angle?

To calculate the number of squares of material required for each roof pitch, we first need to determine the total area of each roof. The total area of a roof is calculated by multiplying the length of the roof by the width of the roof. In this example, the house measures 30 feet by 40 feet, so the total area of the roof is: 30 ft x 40 ft = 1200 sq ft

Next, we need to convert the roof pitch ratios to angles. The pitch ratio represents the rise of the roof for every 12 inches of horizontal run. For example, a 4/12 pitch means that for every 12 inches of horizontal run, the roof rises 4 inches. To convert the pitch ratio to an angle, we can use a roof pitch chart or an online calculator. The angles for a 4/12, 6/12, and 12/12 pitch are approximately:

  • 4/12 pitch: 18.43 degrees

  • 6/12 pitch: 26.57 degrees

  • 12/12 pitch: 45 degrees

Now we can calculate the area of each roof based on the pitch of the roof.

For a 4/12 pitch:

  • Roof area = 1200 sq ft x 1.06 (factor for 4/12 pitch) = 1272 sq ft

  • Number of squares = 1272 sq ft / 100 sq ft = 12.72 squares

For a 6/12 pitch:

  • Roof area = 1200 sq ft x 1.12 (factor for 6/12 pitch) = 1344 sq ft

  • Number of squares = 1344 sq ft / 100 sq ft = 13.44 squares

For a 12/12 pitch:

  • Roof area = 1200 sq ft x 1.41 (factor for 12/12 pitch) = 1692 sq ft

  • Number of squares = 1692 sq ft / 100 sq ft = 16.92 squares


Therefore, a 30' x 40' house with a 4/12 pitch roof requires 12.72 squares of material, a 6/12 pitch roof requires 13.44 squares of roofing material, and a 12/12 pitch roof requires 16.92 squares of material.
